Secrets Your Dentist Will Never Tell You

View as slideshow

We asked 22 dentists from across the country to tell us what they’re really thinking as they peer at our teeth. What came out of their mouths will change the way you treat yours.

Pain isn’t your biggest problem

Some truly educated people think that if nothing in their mouth hurts, they’re fine. High cholesterol doesn’t hurt, either, but it’s a big problem. I honestly think that the general population doesn’t understand that their mouth is part of their body.—Danine Fresch Gray, DDS, general dentist, Arlington, Virginia

michael barbaro

From The New York Times, I’m Michael Barbaro. This is “The Daily.”

Today: for decades hospitals could assume that patients with jobs and health insurance would pay their medical bills. Sarah Kliff on why that’s no longer the case and the aggressive new way that hospitals are forcing those patients to pay up.

It’s Monday, December 2.

“Everyone is friendly; it is clear that they want their patients to be at ease as much as possible. The appointment with the dentist, which consisted of X-rays, a cleaning, and a quick consult, went smoothly and efficiently. I’ll be back, and my husband and son are patients there as well. We’re all very satisfied with the experience.”

“Highly recommend! I called as a new patient looking for zoom whitening services in the area and I was given a same day appointment! The hygienist that performed the zoom whitening on my teeth was Maysoon. She did a magnificent job! My teeth were noticeably bright and white immediately after. Thanks Maysoon! A+++”

H.D. | Google

Remote medicine is the latest tool in the fight against coronavirus

Danbury – Health care leaders are fighting the stifling effect that the coronavirus is having on doctor’s visits with popular technology.

And patients don’t need to leave their home.

Thanks to newly relaxed rules in Washington, D.C., and Hartford, Connecticut families can visit the doctor virtually, using the same teleconferencing technology that has made apps such as FaceTime and Skype household names.

“The patient-doctor relationship is still there,” says Dr. Christopher Lehrach, president of the medical group for Nuvance Health, a seven-hospital network that includes Danbury and Norwalk. “You are still having face-to-face consultations, and elements of the physical examination are still there, such as visual observation, and it is still our own physicians caring for our own patients.”

Lehrach should know.

As the COVID-19 pandemic escalated into a public health crisis, average daily doctor visits to the Nuvance medical group dropped 40 percent, from 5,000 to 3,000. But since
