Out of date mental health facilities at Basildon hospital will be upgraded, thanks to £400 million of government funding.

Dormitories will be replaced with single en-suite rooms.

It is hoped this will help to reduce the duration of patients’ stays, as well as improving infection control.Health Secretary and West Suffolk MP Matt Hancock said it will improve safety and give patients the “dignity they deserve.”

“Mental health staff have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic to keep mental health services open 24/7 so that those most in need can continue to get vital support”, Matt Hancock said.

“Not only will the new single rooms improve the individual care we can offer patients, they will provide a better environment for our hardworking staff too.”

Man dies after being found with gunshot wound in Phoenix

A 23-year-old man died in the hospital after police found him with a gunshot wound in a vehicle near 85th Lane and Monterey Way on Friday afternoon, according to officials.

Phoenix police, at about 3:30 p.m., responded to a report of a shooting at a parking lot of a strip mall near Thomas Road and 75th Avenue, but officers did not find the victim, according to Phoenix police spokeswoman Sgt. Mercedes Fortune.

A few minutes later, officers responded near 85th Lane and Monterey Way to a second call of a person who was shot and found the man, later identified as Anthony Hainsworth, inside a vehicle with a gunshot wound, Fortune said.

The man was taken to a hospital in “very” critical condition, according to Fortune.

Police have not identified a suspect, Fortune said.

As former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie spends his sixth day in a hospital being treated for COVID-19, current Gov. Phil Murphy said Thursday his predecessor is “the quintessential Jersey fighter.”

Christie’s exact condition remains unknown and it’s still unclear what course of treatment he’s receiving. The 58-year-old hasn’t tweeted since Saturday, and doctors, family, and friends have not made any public announcements about how he’s doing.

But a source familiar with the situation told NJ Advance Media on Wednesday that Christie was in good spirits, getting good care, and is not on a ventilator.

Multiple sources said there were no changes as of Thursday afternoon.

Murphy, a Democrat who succeeded Republican Christie in 2018, said he “exchanged notes” with Christie on Wednesday night but has “no further insight” into his condition.

Wisconsin activates field hospital at suburban Milwaukee fairgrounds as coronavirus surge continues

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin health officials announced Wednesday that a field hospital will open next week at the state fairgrounds near Milwaukee as a surge in COVID-19 cases threatens to overwhelm hospitals.

Wisconsin has become a hot spot for the disease over the last month, ranking third nationwide this week in new cases per capita over the last two weeks. Health experts have attributed the spike to the reopening of colleges and K-12 schools as well as general fatigue over wearing masks and socially distancing.

State Department of Health Services Secretary Andrea Palm told reporters during a video conference that the facility will open on Oct. 14.

Neighbors object to converting St. Paul hospital into shelter

Lynne Snediker and Richard Fuerstenberg live in a condo across the street from Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul’s Frogtown neighborhood, with a view of the hospital’s manicured park and sculptures.

They fear what will happen if Ramsey County moves forward with plans to convert the hospital into a homeless shelter.

“We are envisioning tents [with] extra trash, loitering and drugs,” Snediker said.

“This neighborhood has embraced the disadvantaged for a long time,” said Fuerstenberg, listing nearby halfway houses, shelters and subsidized housing.

The two were among more than 230 people who attended a virtual community meeting Thursday to discuss the plan. (Reuters) – U.S. cyclist Chloe Dygert was released from a Bologna hospital on Thursday and will return home a week after suffering a severe leg injury in a crash in the time trial race at the world championships.

Dygert, the 2019 time trial world champion, had looked well on her way to defending her crown when she crashed during a fast descent on the 31.7 km course last Thursday in Imola, Italy.

Six patients have died as a result of a Covid-19 outbreak in the hospital’s male medical ward

A sixth patient from Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry has died after testing positive for Covid-19.

Thirteen patients linked to the County Down hospital’s male medical ward have tested positive for the virus.

Twenty eight members of staff from the ward have tested positive for coronavirus, and 28 staff contacts are self-isolating.

A total of 341 staff members have been tested, the Southern Health Trust has confirmed.

A trust spokesperson expressed “profound sorrow” to the family of the patient who died.

“We can confirm that the independent Serious Adverse Incident review is currently underway and all deaths will be included as part of this process,” the spokesperson said.
